The Story of My Life

Helen Keller

1903

Recently I was visited by a very good friend who had just returned from a long walk in the woods, and I asked her what she had observed. ‘Nothing in particular,’ she replied. I might have been incredulous had I not been accustomed to such responses, for long ago I became convinced that the seeing see little.

—— Helen Keller, Three Days to See

If I were to summarize Helen Keller’s life in a single sentence, none would be more fitting than these words by Romain Rolland:

“There is only one true heroism in the world: to see the world as it is, and to love it.”
